Right Thing, Right Bin [WLDC]

Updated: Mar 13, 2024

All households will have received the WLDC information pack: 'Right Thing, Right Bin'. The scheme supports the council's climate change strategy, approved early in 2021.

Right thing, right bin

Please refer to our community post Refusing Collection and Recycling or view the full waste collection calendar for 2024 here.

Collection will be refused for bins that do not have the right items in them.

Our district is the third local authority in Lincolnshire to sign up to the new scheme. The council believe the change will have a significant impact on our environment.

The plans mean that the current blue co-mingled recycling bin will be collected monthly, rather than the current fortnightly, The blue recycling bins will continue to accept glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, metal tin cans, food tins and clean tinfoil, whilst the new, purple-lidded bin would be collected in the alternate fortnight. There are no current proposals to change any collection days.

The purple bins will be used for clean, dry paper and loose cardboard, which can be recycled up to seven times if not touched by other recyclable materials. More than 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are recycled in the UK each year, accounting for 20% of all household waste. If each person in the country recycled just 10% more paper it would save around five million trees every year.

Right things for your green bin

Did you know that...

If your bin has lost its lid or wheels you can contact WLDC Customer Services using this enquiries form to report the damage. They will attempt to repair your bin's lid and/or wheels without charge. If your bin is split or damaged beyond repair you may have to pay for a replacement bin, unless the damage was reported as caused by the bin collection crew.

Beware of £80 penalty notice for bins left outside of your property boundary:

UK law states you can be fined up to £80 for not returning your bin to inside your property boundary by 7pm of bin collection day. Fixed penalty notices will be issued following a written warning to remove your bin from the footpath/road verge for any of the following reasons

  • causes an obstruction to neighbours

  • restricts access to the pavement or street, for example leaving waste receptacles (bins or bags) out for several days

  • is likely to attract vermin like foxes and rats, such as leaving bags or bins out days before a waste collection

  • is unsightly to neighbours
